Jimmy Lee Asbury, 76, of 502 Norman St. died Monday, Aug.
24, 1998.
A native of Washington, Mr. Asbury was a son of the late
Squire and Pearl Asbury. He was a World War II veteran and a member of
Mount Pleasant Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
Services were Sunday at Mount Pleasant CME Church with
the Rev. Christopher Andrews officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include a sister, Hattie B. Booker, Washington;
and a brother, Jay D. Asbury, Raleigh, N.C.

Berta B. Cleveland
Elberton
Berta Brown Cleveland, 97, of 1507 Montevideo Road died
Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998.
A native of Hart County, Mrs. Cleveland was a daughter
of the late Pearson C. and Ellen McDougald Brown. She was preceded in death
by a son, Edgar "Jack" Cleveland. She was a homemaker and a member of Cokesbury
United Methodist Church.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Strickland Funeral
Home, Hartwell, with the Rev. Al Key officiating. Burial will be in Memorial
Garden of Prayer.
Survivors include two daughters, Edna Pruitt, Lavonia,
and Pat Bradford, Elberton; a sister, Lena Baker, Tampa, Fla.; nine grandchildren
and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Bradford,
1507 Montevideo Road.
Fred E. Cox Jr.
Winder
Fred E. Cox Jr., 76, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998.
Mr. Cox was a son of the late Fred E. and Mary Missouri
Cox. He was a veteran of World War II and worked at Rohr Aircraft and Russell
Nursing Home in the maintenance department.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smith Funeral
Home with the Revs. Ray Fumea and Linwood Smith officiating. Burial will
be in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue Cox; a daughter,
Mary Ellen Thompson, Athens; two sisters, Margaret Mooney and Irene Morris,
both of Winder; a brother, Reece Cox, Benson S.C.; and a grandchild.
The family will receive friends at 3 pm. today at the
funeral home.
John R. Dalton

John R. Dalton, 46, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998.
A native of Barrow County, Mr. Dalton was a son of Bobby
Joe and Etha Dalton, Winder. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service
and was a member of Winder First Baptist Church.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at Bethabra
Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Richard N. Veal officiating.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife,
Marsha Lyle Dalton, Winder; a daughter, Melissa Dalton, Winder; a son,
Vince Dalton, Winder; two sisters, Nancy Luke, Bogart, and Rita Cole, Hartwell;
and two brothers, Roger Dalton and Jimmy Dalton, both of Winder.

Joseph Claude Madden, 85, of 737 Bakers Ferry Road died
Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998.
A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Madden was a son of
the late John Waco and Effie McKelley Madden. He was a retired farmer and
dairyman, a member and inactive deacon of Fortsonia Baptist Church and
a member of the Senior Men's Sunday School Class.
Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Fortsonia Baptist
Church with the Revs. Billy Meeks, Kevin Madden and Tim Adams officiating.
Burial will be in Fortsonia Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Jewell Mills Madden; two daughters,
Ouida M. Saxon, Elberton, and Amy M. Segars, Dewy Rose; five sons, Bill
Madden, Danielsville, Wayne Madden, Washington, George Frank Madden and
Russell Madden, both of Elberton, and Byron Madden, Carrollton; four sisters,
Corine Peppers, Elberton, and Sue Hancock, Hazel Erwin and Jean Manley,
all of Winterville; five brothers, H.E. "Buck" Madden, John Albert Madden
and Frank Madden, all of Elberton, Arthur Madden, Greensboro, and Paul
Madden, Atlanta; 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bill Madden Jr., Kent Saxon, Tim Saxon,
Bryan Segars, Brent Maden and Steve Madden. Deacons of Fortsonia Baptist
Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family is at the residence.

William Eugene "Gene" Maness, 60, of 710 Elbert St. died
Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998.
A native of Hall County, Mr. Maness was a son of Ada Louise
Hawkins Maness, Gainesville, and the late William Anderson Maness. He was
a granite polisher and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose
and Elks lodges and the Clan Gunn Society of North America. He was of the
Baptist faith.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Berry Funeral Home
with the Rev. John Woodson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hills
Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife,
Gail Stone Maness; a son, Gregory Maness, Smyrna; a sister, Mary Nell Smith,
Gainesville; and two brothers, Ray Maness, Dahlonega, and Wayne Maness,
Gainesville.

McGarity, Don Stoner and Jeff Evans.

Connie L. Payne, 81, of Henderson Road died Sunday, Oct.
4, 1998.
A native of Atlanta, Mrs. Payne was a daughter of the
late N.F. and Estelle Fincher Evans and widow of Jay Wilson and Robert
Payne. She was self- employed in the poultry industry.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Silver Shoals Baptist
Church with the Revs. Ralph Smith, Donald Tritt and Avery Bond officiating.
Burial will be in Diamond Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters, Cindy Craig, Homer,
Ruby Nix, Gillsville, and Frances Wilson, Commerce; a sister, Bessie Moody,
Oxford; two brothers, J.D. Evans, Denver, Colo., and John Henry Evans,
Dawsonville; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchildren.

Gayzelle Payne, 73, of 204 Lake Oglethorpe Drive died
Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Payne was a daughter
of the late Griff and Lena Saxon Smith. She was a homemaker and a member
of Corinth Baptist Church.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Corinth Baptist Church
with the Revs. Richard McFall and Clifton Barrett officiating. Burial will
be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, George Payne, Arnoldsville;
two daughters, Tracy Rogers, Arnoldsville, and Brenda Gail Allen, Commerce;
a sister, Wilma Hill, Commerce; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren
and nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Paul Hill, Roger Hill, Ricky Waters,
Steve Melton, Tommy Melton and Remington Bowling. Honorary pallbearers

Mozell Phelps, 98, of 1791 Avondale road died Friday,
Oct. 2, 1998.
A native of Oconee County, Mrs. Phelps was a daughter
of the late Frances and Henry Phelps.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion Baptist
Church with the Rev. Jerry David officiating. Burial will be in the church
cemetery.
Survivors include a brother, Henry Phelps, Bishop; and
nieces and nephews.

Jimmy Sauls, 62, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998.
Mr. Sauls was a son of Mary Sue Sauls, Winder, and the
late Robert L. Sauls. He was a member and deacon of Union Baptist Church
and worked for 12 years for Barrow County.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Union Baptist Church
with the Rev. Rusty Newman officiating. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial
Gardens.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife,
Marie S. Sauls; a daughter, Amy Page, Winder; a son, Russ Sauls, Winder;
two sisters, Reba Elrod and Nancy Barnes, both of Winder; two brothers,
Bobby Sauls, Dahlonega, and Kenneth Sauls, Winder; and five grandchildren.

Ella Elizabeth James Vandiver, 85, of 405 Vandiver Road,
Red Hill Community, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998.
A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Vandiver was a daughter
of the late Edward and Martha Elizabeth Smith James and widow of Edward
W. Vandiver. She was preceded in death by a son, Steve Vandiver. She was
a homemaker and a member of Broad River Baptist Church.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Broad River
Baptist Church with the Revs. Ernest Ivester and Eddie Burnette officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Boutwell, Hull,
and Patsy Knotts, Phenix City, Ala.; two sons, Kenneth Vandiver and James
Vandiver, both of Carnesville; a sister, Cora Lee Ivester, Toccoa; 10 grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren.

Jamie Vandiver, Matthew Vandiver, Allen Vandiver and David Wiley.

Jane P. Walker, 50, of 271 Paris St. died Sunday, Oct.
4, 1998.
A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Walker was a daughter
of the late Robert Walker and Viola Campbell Walker.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Beech Haven Baptist
Church with the Rev. Archie Slaton officiating. The body will be placed
in the church at 11 a.m. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Natasha McCrary, Athens;
a sister, Lovie Walker, Athens; four brothers, Robert Walker, Bishop, and

Mildred Jane Chapman, 65, of U.S. Highway 29 North died

A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Chapman was a daughter
of the late Clayborn Frederick and Beulah Jane Alewine Chapman and was
the widow of Johnny Joe Warren. She was owner and operator of All American
Flea Market for many years and was of the Baptist faith.

Burial will be in Moons Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Stephens County, Mrs. Wilbanks was a daughter
of Debbie Sutton, Clarkesville, and Michael Chitwood, Lula. She was a member
of Providence Baptist Church and attended Baldwin Church of God.
