Fred Junior Osceola

Fred Junior Osceola, age 57, of Brighton Indian Reservation, died Friday, March 9, 2001. He has lived on Brighton Reservation most of his life and was also born on Brighton Reservation.

Survivors include: his wife of 33 years, Addie Osceola of Brighton; four sons, Rodney, Reno and Billy all of Brighton and Ramsey of Hollywood; one daughter, Abby James of Okeechobee; 12 grandchildren; one brother, Glenn Osceola of Big Cypress; and, one sister, Penny Jimmy of Bradenton. He is also survived by his nephews, Nathan, Rory, Jessie, Christopher and, niece Lonnie.

Services will be held at the Big Cypress Indian Reservation Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 12.

Interment will follow with Rev. Wonder Johns officiating the services.

All arrangements are under the care of the Buxton Funeral Home.

Teela Amelia Carlton

Teela Amelia Carlton, age 55, of Okeechobee, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital. Born Feb. 6, 1946, in Knoxville, Tenn., Ms. Carlton had been a resident of Okeechobee for more than 11 years. She was an office manager in a doctor's office and was a member of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include: one daughter, Christy N. Varnadore and husband Joseph of Okeechobee; one son, Clint Carlton of Addison, Texas; two sisters, Nancy Lewis of Clinton, Tenn. and Pat Ulbrich of Longwood; and, two grandchildren, Stephen Connor Varnadore and Chandler Varnadora both of Okeechobee.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 14, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Bass Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be Thursday, March 15, at 11 a.m. at Carlton Cemetery in Fort Pierce with Rev. Richard E. Whipple officiating.

Interment will follow in Carlton Cemetery, Fort Pierce.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Laney Louise Posey

Laney Louise Posey, age 78, of Okeechobee, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital. She was born on Jan. 16, 1923, in Warwick, Ga. to Oscar and Julia Hayslip.

Louise along with her late husband Zachary, were the owners of Posey's Dairy, Inc., and Posey's Corner Grocery. She was also in the restaurant business.

She was preceded in death by her husband Zachary, son Danny, and great-grandson Bryan.

Survivors include: her daughters, Sue Mobbs (Herbert) of North Carolina, Betty Massagee (Tom) of Gainesville, Linda Crews (Ronnie) and Sarah Scott both of Okeechobee and Donna Wallace (Jimmy) of Georgia; son Elvie Posey (Rosemary) of Okeechobee; three sisters, Viola, Jeanette Harrison of Georgia and Jannie Lou of Cordele, Ga.; and one brother, James Hayslip of Cordele, Ga. Louise was also a loving grandmother to 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 13, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Bass Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, March 14, at 11 a.m. at the Bass Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor John C. Hirst officiating.

There will be a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. at the Palm Beach Memorial Park, Lantana on Wednesday, March 14, with burial to follow.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Edward R. Ortega

Edward R. Ortega, age 76, of Okeechobee, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the Martin Memorial Medical Center in Stuart. Born April 17, 1924, in Kerrville, Texas, Mr. Ortega had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1974 and was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include: his loving wife of 55 years, Antonia G. Ortega of Okeechobee; four sons, Don Guerra of Lawton, Okla., Edward Ortega Jr. of Kerrville, Texas, Joe Ortega and Richard Ortega, both of Okeechobee; two daughters, Janie Sauceda and Maria Moreno, both of Fort Pierce; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and, one sister, Eloise Gutierrez of Kerriville, Texas.

Friends may call at the Buxton Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 13, from 4 until 6 p.m.

Funeral service will be conducted at the Buxton Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 14, at 10 a.m. with Pastor Warren of the United Pentecostal Church, officiating.

Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mikayla Faith Gibson

Mikayla Faith Gibson, infant daughter of Michael and Margarita Gibson, was born and died on Friday, March 9, 2001, at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Fort Pierce.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two brothers, Justin and Jared Gibson, both of Okeechobee; maternal grandparents, Krespin and Rosa Martinez of Okeechobee; and paternal grandparents, Kathy and James Gibson of Avon Park.

Funeral services will be held at the Buxton Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 13, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Tom Velie, Pastor of Freewill Mission, officiating.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

John Seymour Weston Davis

John Seymour Weston Davis, 87, of Clewiston, died at his home on

Saturday, March 10, 2001. He was a native of Fort Myers, born of English

parents in 1913, they settled in Okeechobee in 1915.

An avid outdoors men from childhood, he loved to fish and hunt. He was

hooked on aviation since he was seven years old, watching the Jenny Biplanes fly over Okeechobee. He was skilled as an accomplished finish carpenter which allowed him to repair airplanes in exchange for flying lessons from Charlie Miller. He hauled hundreds of passengers and performed in Barnstorming shows in the 193Os. He continued his flight training while an aircraft and power plant mechanic

in Miami, Embry Riddle Flight School hired him as a flight instructor

for British Cadets before the U.S. went to war. He became flight commander for the number five British Flight Training School at Riddle Field, Clewiston. He then joined Eastern Airlines for 30 years where he became a captain flying DC-3's, Martin, Convair, Constellations, DC-7's and 727's.

After retiring from Eastern he returned to cattle ranching after a 36 year

hiatus. He continued his love for flying by building a hanger and airstrip

on the Davis Ranch. He has several airplanes which included Aeroncas, Culver Cadet, Piper J-3, Piper Racer Mooneys and built a Kitfox Aircraft from a kit. As a cattleman he raised and bred excellent stock which produced several 4-H Hendry County grand champion steers and heifers throughout the years.

Survivors include: his wife of 54 years Celia Ronningen Davis of Clewiston;

daughters Lenora Davis Coppola of West Palm Beach, Anita Davis Revell

and Maria Davis Carter both of Nashville, Tenn., and Marjorie Davis Grimshaw of Ellijay, Ga.; son John Seymour Weston Davis II of Fort Myers; sister Shirley Davis Bradley of Chattanooga, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren;

14 great-grandchildren; and, three great-great-grandchildren. Honorary

pallbearer was Rod Chandler.

Funeral services and interment took place at Evergreen Cemetery in

Okeechobee, on Wednesday March 14, with the Rev. Roy P. Carter

officiating.

Family request in lieu of flowers memorials in his name be made to the Hope Hospice of Fort Myers, American Cancer Society or the Boy Scouts

of America.

James Marion Craig

James Marion Craig, age 87, died Saturday, March 10, 2001 at Raulerson Hospital in Okeechobee. Born on Jan. 9, 1914 in Fordsville, Ky., he was a resident of Wheatsville, Indiana for over 30 years. Mr. Craig was self employed as a owner/operator of Fifty States Landscaping, after retiring in 1980 he moved to Okeechobee, and was affiliated with the Free Will Baptist Church of North Judson, Ind.

Preceded in death by: his parents, one sister, Dicie Brite of Calif., and one daughter, Marian Holbrook of West Palm Beach.

Survivors include: four sons; Kenneth (Elenor) Craig and James (Sallie) Craig, both of North Judson, Ind., Robert (Donna) Craig of Valparalso, and Bradley (Brenda) Craig of San Pierre, three daughters; Marjorie (Homer) Howard of Valparalso, Barbara (Chris) Whitaker, and Terri (Craig) Whitaker, of Wheatfield, Ind., 24 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren,four sisters; Mary (Ed) Brite of Wales, FL., Wanda (Brud) Doell of Lake Wales, Edith Savitz of Moreno Valley, Calif., and Ethel Yanchus of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Funeral service is on Friday, March 16, 2001 at the Boersma Funeral Home in Wheatfield, Ind., with Reverend Jerry Hall officiating.

All arrangements have been under the direction and care of the Boersma Funeral Home in Wheatfield, Indiana.

Beatrice "Aunt Bea" Colton

Beatrice "Aunt Bea" Colton, age 82, of Okeechobee, died Thursday, March 8, 2001 at Raulerson Hospital. Born September 1, 1918 in Quincy, Florida, Mrs. Colton had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1926. She was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Dean's Court.

Preceded in death by; her husband, Tweety Colton; daughter, Joyce Colton; three sisters, Louide, Jessie Lee and Lilia; two brothers, Roy and T.J.

Survivors include: her devoted daughter, Joan Colton Thomas (Robert) and son, Johnny Colton (Susie), all of Okeechobee; two grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and sorrowing friends.

Friends may call at the First Missionary Baptist Church of Dean's Court, 811 N.W. Ninth Street, on Saturday, March 17, 2001 from 12 noon to 1 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted following visitation with Reverend Leroy Smith, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

James Ronald "Ronnie" Jones

James Ronald "Ronnie" Jones, age 60, of Canal Point, died Monday, March 12, 2001. Born September 29, 1940 in Pahokee, Mr. Jones has been a resident of Canal Point for 23 years. he was a member of the Moose Lodge and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Preceded in death by: his brothers, Ralph Dalton Jones, Archie Thomas Jones and Dale Allen Jones; and sister, Reba Jones Davis.

Survivors include: his wife of 26 years, Sharon Jones of Okeechobee; one son, James Ronald Jones II, of Okeechobee; one daughter, Jennifer Jones Hickman (Keith) of Okeechobee; two granddaughters; Jordan Brianna Hickman and Kalyn Elizabeth Hickman of Okeechobee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Buxton Funeral Home of Thursday, March 15, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 6 p.m. following visitation.

Helen C. Robinson

Helen C. Robinson, age 79, of Okeechobee, died Monday, March 12, 2001 at Raulerson Hospital. Born September 22, 1921 in Lyons, Ga., Mrs. Robinson had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1935. She was a member of Oakview Baptist Church.

Preceded in death by her husband, John and son, Joseph.

Survivors include: two sons; John Robinson (Connie) of Ceroitos, Calif., and Ronald E. Robinson (Debbie) of Jacksonville; one daughter-in-law, Melody; three sisters, Eupha Mae Hare and Jessie Frost of Okeechobee and Ellouise Weyhe of Montgomery, Ala.

There will be no visitation or services.

Verla Jane Connelly

Verla Jane Connelly, age 73, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee. Born on May 7, 1927, in Pigeon Creek, Ala., Mrs. Connelly was a housewife.

Preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Connelly.

Survivors include: two daughters, Janet Begrin of Douglas, Wyo., and Debbie Evans of Willows, Calif.; son, David Paul Connely of Willows, Calif.; seven sisters, Bus Ezuber of Fort Myers, Ruby Deline of Lake Placid, Jeannie Davis of Wetumpka, Ala., Virginia Walker of South Bay, Lucy Cameron of Clewiston, Dorinda Lambdin of Okeechobee and Angela Kelsoe of Miami; two brothers, Lewis Kelsoe and Lee Kelsoe, both of Clewiston; five grandchildren; and, 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service is on Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m., at the Bass Funeral Home Chapel.

Visitation is on Thursday, March 15, from 5 p.m. until service time at 7 p.m. at the Bass Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will be at Willows Cemetery, Willows, Calif.

Richard Anthony Wesneski

Richard Anthony Wesneski, age 49, of Okeechobee, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at his residence. Born April 3, 1951, in Hartsford, Conn. Mr. Wesneski was an evaporator operator for the Ocean Spray, Inc.

He survived by his wife Susan Wesneski of Okeechobee.

Funeral services will be in Connecticut. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Collinsville, Conn.

William H. Roberts Jr.

William H. Roberts Jr., age 76, of Brookville, Ind., died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital. Born Nov. 18, 1924, in Brookville, Ind. Mr. Roberts owned rental property, was a veteran and has been a life long winter resident of Okeechobee.

He survived by his wife Betty L. Roberts of Brookville, Ind. (winter resident) and brother, Ernest Robert of Liberty, Ind.

Funeral services will be in Brookville, Ind. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Brookville, Ind.

Norman Henry McMaster

Norman Henry McMaster, age 83, of Mikado, Mich., died Sunday, March 19, 2001, at his son's residence. Born July 26, 1917, in Gustin Township, Mich., Mr. McMaster had been a winter resident of Okeechobee for the past three years. He was a member of the Eagles in Barton City, Mich.

Survivors include: one son, Melvin (Faye) McMaster of Okeechobee; one grandson, Mark McMaster of Okeechobee; one granddaughter, Debra Magill of Canton, Mich.; two great-grandsons, Justin Magill of Canton, Mich., and Brett McMaster of Okeechobee; three great-granddaughters, Brittney McMaster of Okeechobee, Jennifer Magill and Jessica Magill of Canton, Mich; one brother, Wayne McMaster of Bradenton; and, one sister Lillian Smith of Mikado, Mich.

Funeral services and interment will take place in Mikado, Mich. and are under the direction of the Gillies Funeral Home in Lincoln, Mich.

All local arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Hal Frederick "Fred" Hendee

Hal Frederick "Fred" Hendee, age 77, died on Tuesday, March 20, 2001. He was born on April 9, 1923 in Grand Rapids. Mr. Hendee owned and operated a construction company for 43 years, retiring in 1986, as well as farmed all his life. He enjoyed living in Florida, spending time on his boat and in his shop. He was a member of the Okeechobee, Florida Elks Club # 2558 and the Ionia Moose Lodge # 998.

Preceded in death by: his son, Jerry Foote; brothers, Wayne and Raymond; and sisters, Laura and Gayla.

Survivors include: his wife of 43 years, Mae; daughter Patricia (David) McGregor of Portland; son Donald (Billie) Foote of Ononadaga; daughter-in-law Janet Foote of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother Robert (Barbara) Hendee of Portland; sister Arlene (Gerald) Thelen of Fowler; sister-in-law Dorothy Hendee of Park Ridge, Ill.; several nieces and nephews.

The Funeral service will be conducted by the Reverend Scott K. Otis, Pastor , at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 23, 2001 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland, with grave side services following at Portland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday.

R. Michael "Mikey" Brunning

R. Michael "Mikey" Brunning, age 48, of Indianapolis, Ind., died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis, Ind. Born March 3, 1953, in Indianapolis, Ind., Mr. Brunning worked in dispatch for Ameritech in Indianapolis for 23 years, and had also worked reservations for American TransAir and was terminal manager for AirWisconsin. He was a 1971 graduate of Roncalli High School in Indianapolis, Ind. and was a member of Ameritech Pioneers, Big Brothers, Communication workers of America Local No. 4900 and sons of American Legion.

Survivors include: his parents August H. "Gus" and Ernestine M. "Sandy" Brunning of Okeechobee; brother, Dennis J. Brunning of Okeechobee; one sister, Elizabeth Ann Hughes of Indianapolis, Ind.; grandmother, Elizabeth J. Shields of Moosehaven; three nieces; and, five nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 28, from 4 until 8 p.m. at the G.H. Herrman funeral home on Madison Avenue in Indianapolis, Ind.

Funeral service will be Thursday, March 29, at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral home and at 10 a.m. at the Holy Name Catholic Church in Beechgrove, Ind.

Richard C. Alguire

Richard C. Alguire, age 64, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, March 25, 2001. Born Nov. 27, 1936, in Watertown, N.Y., Mr. Alguire had been a resident of Okeechobee for eight years. He worked as a Harness Horseman in New York and Canada; enjoyed boating, golfing, motorcycling and as an avid hunter. Mr. Alguire was a member of the American Legion Post 64 in Okeechobee and was of the Episcopal Faith.

Preceded in death by his father, Ralph E. Alguire and brother Tommy F. Alguire.

Survivors include: his son, Corey Saur (Dana) of Taylor, Mich.; three daughters, Crystal Whitford (Jim) of Edwards, N.Y., Candice Hensler of Lynnwood, Wa., and Shelly Gladle of Lady Lake; mother, Ruth Alguire of Okeechobee; nine grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; several step grandchildren; two sister, Deanna Daniels of Eaves (Kevin) of West Palm Beach and Shirley Steward (Jack) of Okeechobee.

A memorial service will be held at the Buxton Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 28, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Edward Weiss, Pastor of Church of Our Saviour Episcopal, officiating.

Edward John Slimon

Edward John Slimon, Jr., 35, died April 4, 2001, at his residence in Okeechobee.

Mr. Slimon was born July, 6, 1965 in Youngstown, Ohio.

He was a mechanic.

He was preceded in death by his brother James "Jimmy" Walton, 12-31-99.

Mr. Slimon is survived by his: mother - Betty Walton, Okeechobee; sister - Candy Messersmith, Orlando; and, two brothers - Mark Slimon, Tampa, and Dale Proudfoot, Okeechobee.

Services will be held Saturday, April 7, at 3 p.m. in the Bass Funeral Home Chapel, 205 N.E. Second St. Rev. Scott Leslie of the Okeechobee Presbyterian Church will be officiating.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 7, from 2 until 3 p.m. at the Bass Funeral Home.

Russell Marvin Godwin

Russell M. "Marvin" Godwin, age, 74, of Palmdale, died April 4, 2001, in Labelle. He was born Sept. 11, 1926, in Okeechobee to Thomas Jefferson Godwin and Lettie A. Godwin. Marvin worked 28 years for Lykes Brothers before retiring in the early 1980s.

Survivors include: his daughter, Ruby Hansen of Labelle; sons, Larry Godwin of North Fort Myers, Tim Godwin of Clewiston and Ronnie Godwin of Lake Placid; brother, T.L. Godwin of Okeechobee; sister, Lara Maxine Thomas of Okeechobee; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and, three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held Friday, April 6, at 11 a.m. Graveside will follow at the Ortona Cemetery with Larry Luckey officiating.

Landon Fortner

Landon Fortner, age 85, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital. Born on April 9, 1915, Mr. Fortner was a Plumber by trade, and a member of the Grace Brethren Church.

Survivors include:his loving wife of 60 years, Annie Mae Fortner of Okeechobee; daughter, Beverly and husband Buddy; two sons, L.C. and wife Brenda, and Richard and wife Janice, all of Okeechobee; brother, Al Fortner of Okeechobee; two sisters, Hazel Evans of Sebring and Delores Hare of Lake Wales; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation is on Sunday, April 8, from 4 until 6 p.m., at the Bass Funeral Home.

Services are Monday, April 9, 2001 at 4 p.m. at Grace Brethren Church with Reverend Larry Zimmerman and Dr. John W. Keith officiating.

Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
