Stewart ‘Stew' Shipman Fritts

Stewart ‘Stew' Shipman Fritts, of Okeechobee, formerly of Houston, Texas, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001. Born May 26, 1911, in Phillipsburg, N.J., he was married to the former Jesse ‘Pratt" Fritts and brother of Leroy H. Fritts, deceased, and Elizabeth Hill Walters, deceased, all descendants of the Frederick Fritts pioneer family of Spruce Run, N.J.

Fritts graduated from Newark College of Engineering, now NJIT, as a civil engineer and as general superintendent and professional engineer employed by Lone Star Industries. His duties included research, establishment and implementation of modern cement-mill locations across the U.S. and South America.

Fritts served in the Army Air Corps during W.W.II and was a member of the Masonic Phillipsburg Lodge No. 52 F&AM. A member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Phillipsburg, N.J. and Lazybrook Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, he especially remembered with great fondness the Adult Sunday School Class there.

Survivors include: his beloved sister-in-law Doris Ann Fritts; three nieces Doris Ann Timmeney, Elizabeth Ann Deal and Catherine Hill Long; nephew John Stewart Fritts; great-nephews, Ted Steckel, Kevin Steckel and Michael Fritts; great-nieces, Melissa Fritts, Cynthia Rader and Diane Zellner; and, three great-great-nephews, Connor, Ian and Aiden Steckel.

In lieu of flowers donations welcomed by Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fla. 34973.

There will be no services.

All arrangements are entrusted under the direction and care of the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Anna Belle Hacker

Anna Belle Hacker, age 87, of Felds formerly of LaBelle, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital in Okeechobee. Ms. Hacker was born on March 14, 1913, in LaBelle.

Survivors include: daughter: Betty J. Johnson of Felda; sister Elizabeth Lanzl of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother Robert L. Prescott of Felda; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and, nine great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services to be held on Friday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. at the International Christian Fellowship Church in LaBelle.

Visitation is Thursday, Feb. 1, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Bass Funeral Home in Okeechobee.

Burial is at the Ortona Cemetery in Ortona.

Shirley June Boger

Shirley June Boger, age 78, of Okeechobee, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Okeechobee. Born June 3, 1922, in Alma, Mich., Mrs. Boger had been a resident of Okeechobee for 12 years having formerly resided in Winter Haven.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Boger.

Survivors include: one son, Scott M. Beltinck (Julie) of Polk City; four daughters, Karen K. Torres (Raul) of Fillmore, Calif.,Patricia A. Harrington (Charles) of Greenville, Mich., Janet M. Beltnick of Port St. Lucie, and Marion E. Harris (Kim) of Aiken, S.C. ; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gilbert Goodwin of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Donald Goodwin (Marjorie) of Prudenville, Mich.

A Gathering of Friends will be held in the screen room at Riverbend Mobile Home Park, 1307 S. Parrott Ave.,in Okeechobee, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 2.

All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Dana Mae Hargrove

Dana Mae Hargrove, age 97, of Okeechobee, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at the Okeechobee Health Care Facility. Born Sept. 29, 1903, in Pulaski, Tenn., Ms. Hargrove had came to Okeechobee from West Palm Beach in 1983. She was a housewife by occupation.

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Hargrove and son Carvell Dean Hargrove.

Survivors include: one daughter, Frankie Russell Edwards of Okeechobee; one brother , C.L. Hargrove of Pulaski, Tenn.; one sister, Annie Caplay of Lynnville, Tenn.; three grandsons and their wives, Terry and Karen Russell, Tim and Michelle Russell and Tony and Vickey Russell all of Okeechobee; three granddaughters and their husbands, Carolyn and Joe Brock of Sebring, Jody and Eddie Harmon of Fellsmere and Kim and Bill Oberst of Panama City; 15 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Friday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Okeechobee Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Lindell Selvey officiating. Interment was followed at Evergreen Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Kelly Lynn Cornell

Kelly Lynn Cornell, age 37, of Okeechobee, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at her residence. Born November 9, 1963 in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Mrs. Cornell had been a resident of Okeechobee for ten years, formerly residing in Livingston County, Mich., for twenty years. She was a graduate of West Highland Christian Academy and attended the Resurrection Life World Outreach Church. Her hobby was sewing.

Survivors include: her husband, Jess Ewin Cornell of Okeechobee; son, Michael E. Cornell of Okeechobee; daughter, Jennifer L. Cornell of Okeechobee; parents, Marion V. and Nancy A. Swartz of Okeechobee; and two brothers, Kevin Swartz of Howell, Mich., and Tim Swartz of Okeechobee.

Friends may call at the Buxton Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at 1 p.m. in the Buxton Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Bobby Colvin, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Neasey Alexandra Foley

Neasey Alexandra Foley, infant daughter of Joseph M. and Stacie Foley, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001 at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Fort Pierce.

Preceded in death by her uncle, Billy DeWayne Foley.

Survivors include: her parents, Joseph M. Foley and Stacie L. Foley of N.C.; maternal grandparents, Charles and Judy Lawhon of Lakeport; maternal great grandmothers, Laurie Smith and Dorothy Lawhon; paternal grandmother, Sandy Smith of Okeechobee; paternal great grandmother, Mary Griffin of Auburn, Ala.; uncle and aunt, Robert and Mellisa Smith of Okeechobee; aunt, Kristina Kellogg of Lakeport; niece, Kayla Smith of Okeechobee; and nephew, Billy James "B.J." Foley of Okeechobee.

Private family grave side services and interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Herbert Lee Shaffer, Sr.

Herbert Lee Shaffer, Sr., age 63, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at his residence in Okeechobee. Mr. Shaffer was born May 9, 1937 in Bristol, Va. He was a Milker on a Dairy farm.

He was preceded in his death by his wife, Eleanor Shaffer and daughter,Vickie Shaffer.

Survivors include: son, Herbert L. Shaffer, Jr. of Okeechobee, daughter, Carol Jolly of Okeechobee, three granddaughters three grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial Service is Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 at 10 a.m. at the Bass Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. John W. Keith, Pastor of Oakview Baptist Church officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Karen Dianne Rogers

Karen Dianne Rogers, age 57, of Okeechobee, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital. She had been a resident of Okeechobee for 30 years and was a member of Word of Life Fellowship Church.

Survivors include: three sons, Gary Jasek of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Kevin Rogers and Kendall Rogers, both of Okeechobee; four grandchildren; and one brother.

Friends may call at the Buxton Funeral Home on Thursday, Feb. 8, from 10 until 11 a.m.

Funeral service will follow visitation at 11 a.m. with Pastor Mike Davis, Abundant Blessings Assembly of God Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Kenneth Leland "Lee" Post

Kenneth Leleand "Lee" Post, 66, of Sebring, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 at his residence. A native of Bristol, Conn., he came to Sebring eight years ago from West Palm Beach. He was the owner of a lawn care business. He was a member of Moose Lodge # 1753, Okeechobee and a Moose Legionnaire.

Survivors include: his wife, Marilyn L. Post of Sebring; three children, Kenneth L. Post, Jr., of Okeechobee, Sheri Jenne of Pigeon Forge, Tenn., Jacki Post of Palm Beach Gardens; one grandson, Jacob Cattrill of Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Funeral services will be on Monday, Feb. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Fountain Funeral Home Chapel, with Father John Belfield, officiating.

Entombment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Gregory James Russakis

Gregory James Russakis, age 31, of Fort Pierce, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 in West Palm Beach. Mr. Russakis was born in Fort Pierce, and had been a resident all his life.

Mr. Russakis was President of South Florida Hedging and Topping, Owner/Partner of Russakis Ranch Limited, Co-Owner and Partner of Southern Oaks Tree Farm, all in Fort Pierce. He loved hunting, fishing and racing. He was a member of the National Turkey Federation, National Hot Rod Association, Ducks Unlimited and a Special Deputy, of Saint Lucie County Sheriff's Department.

Survivors include: Son, Garret J. Russakis of Fort Pierce; Mother, Sheila Blair of Thomasville, N.C.; Father, Jim G. Russakis of Fort Pierce; Brother, Nick J. Russakis of Fort Pierce; Grandmother, Nadine Ward of West Palm Beach.

Calling hours are on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home Chapel, Fort Pierce.

Services are at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb.12, 2001 at Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home, located at 3015 Okeechobee Road, Fort Pierce, with Reverend Craig Bridgers of The Crossings Community Church officiating.

Burial to follow at Riverview Memorial Park in Fort Pierce.

Martha Jane Harmon

Martha Jane Harmon, age 70, of Okeechobee, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital. Born March 17, 1930, in Fairmont, W.Va., Mrs. Harmon had resided in Okeechobee since 1955.

Preceded in death by one son, Gregory Harmon, survivors include three sons, George Harmon Jr., Gordon Harmon and Glenn Harmon (Judy) all of Okeechobee; one daughter, Gloria Allen (Doyce) of Okeechobee; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four brothers, Charles Gaskil, David Gaskil and Vance Gaskil of Morgantown, W.Va. and Red Gaskil of Gray, Ga.; and, two sisters, Jerry Mercer and Vera Drain of Morgantown, W.Va.

There will no visitation or services.

Edward Dowe Tyner

Edward Dowe Tyner, age 73, of Okeechobee, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital. Born Oct. 29, 1927, in Okeechobee, Mr. Tyner had been a lifetime resident of Okeechobee. He was a member of the North Okeechobee Church of God.

He was predeceased by his son, Dowe Tyner and daughter, Denita Tyner.

Survivors include: his devoted wife of 54 years, Reta Tyner of Okeechobee; two sons, Durwin Tyner (Patricia) and Dellen Tyner (Sharon) all of Basinger; four daughters, Dale Tyner of Lantana, Delta Deadwyler (Don) of Branford, Deanna Tyner of Gainesville and Dorinda Mixon (Gerry) of Basinger; four grandsons, Durwin Tyner, Darryel Tyner and Vince Tyner, all of Basinger and Dallas Deadwyler (Erin) of Branford; two granddaughters, Cindy Tyner Pearce (Jason) of Frostproof and Shawna Tyner of Basinger; two great-grandsons, Michael Coker of Frostproof and Ocean Tyner of Basinger and one great-granddaughter, Josie Pearce of Frostproof. In addition, he is also survived by one sister, Gertie Jones of Labelle; one stepgrandson, Ronnie Deadwyler; three stepgranddaughters, Debbie, Mary and Becky; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Buxton Funeral Home on Wednesday, Feb. 14, from 4 until 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. at the North Okeechobee Church of God, 15949 N.W. 30th Terrace, with Pastor Noah Taylor and Rev. Josh Caraway, Pastor of the Basinger Church of God, officiating. Interment will follow in Basinger Cemetery.

Michael C. Gurny

Michael C. Gurny, 59, of Port Saint Lucie died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 at YeeHaw Junction, Florida. Michael C. Gurny was born in Bronx, N.Y. He came to this area from Hicksville, Long Island, N.Y., and has lived here for 21 years. Mr. Gurny was an Owner/Operator of Tri-County Mortuary Transfer Service since 1985. He retired after 16 years from N.Y. City Police Department, and Saint Lucie Sheriff's office for two years, and a former Boy Scout Leader. He was a member of the Saint Lucie Catholic Church in Port Saint Lucie.

Preceded in his death by his parents Conrad and Esther Gurny.

Survivors include: his wife, Paulette Gurny of Port Saint Lucie, son; Stephen T. Gurny of Lake Worth, brother; Conrad Gurny of Port Saint Lucie, four sisters; Judith Saliba of Port Saint Lucie, Teena Anatala of Brooklyn, N.Y., Connie Senatore of Odenville, Ala., Rochelle Baranoski of Hampton Bay, L.I., N.Y.

Visitation is on Wednesday, Feb. 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. (Vigil Service) at Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services are on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. at Saint Lucie Catholic Church.

Barbara Jane Alexander

Barbara Jane Alexander was born on Oct. 18, 1919, in Elwood, Ind., to Ralph Leo and Vivian Burris Cox. She grew up in Elwood and married Lawrence "Dutch" Alexander soon after graduating from high school.

Two children arrived to make the family complete. Steve was born Jan. 28, 1943, and Toby on Dec. 13, 1944. After returning from service in World War II, the family moved to a farm near Curtisville. Barbara was active supporting the children's school and community activities at Curtisville Grade School and Windfall High School, and also shared the work of tending garden and animals on the family farm. She was a wonderful cook, and holiday dinners were usually timed so that everyone was ravenous before the meal began. First and foremost, she was a devoted wife and mother.

After Dutch's retirement in 1975, they moved to Okeechobee, and enjoyed many years of fishing, flea markets and friends. Photos of her give grandchildren and four great-grandchildren were always nearby. On July 27, 2000, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Survivors include: her husband Dutch of Okeechobee; daughter Toby Weismiller of Silver Springs, Md.; son Steve of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and, four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, Feb. 18, from 4 until 6 p.m. at the Bass Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at the Bass Funeral Home Chapel.

Frances Hoard

Frances Hoard, age 92, of Okeechobee, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital. Born April 24, 1908, in Sweet Ireland, Ind., Ms. Hoard had been a resident of Okeechobee for two years. She was a seamstress in the clothing industry and was Baptist by faith.

Preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hall Hoard, Dec. 31, 1993, and son James Roland Hoard, February of 1983.

Survivors include: son, Dennis Hoard of Okeechobee; one daughter, Juanita Fergerson of Tallahassee; daughter-in-law, Ruth Hoard of Hollywood; brother-in-law Leroy Bullage of Clarksville, Ind.; sister Gertrude Grasch of Rhodelia, Ky.; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; and, many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Inverness with Captain Samuel H. Murray, Chaplain with the 82nd Airborne Division, officiating.

Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Inverness.

George Dennis Vinson

George Dennis Vinson, age 43, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at his residence.

Born Oct. 17, 1957, in Folkston, Ga., Mr. Vinson had been a lifetime resident of Okeechobee. Mr. Vinson's interests included car racing and computers.

Survivors include: his wife of 24 years, Vicki; one son, Jeremy Wayne Vinson; two daughters, Shannon Jones and husband Coy and Jessica Snow and husband Weston, all of Okeechobee. In addition, he survived by grandsons Jeremy Wayne Vinson Jr. and Clay Snow both of Okeechobee, his parents, George and Joann Vinson of St. Mary's, Ga., and two sisters, Kathy Litteral and husband J.P. and Georgann Hewitt and husband Frank also of Okeechobee.

Friends may call at the Buxton Funeral Home on Thursday, Feb. 22, from 5 until 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 6 p.m. in the Buxton Funeral Home Chapel.

Jeanette R. Griffin

Jeanette R. Griffin, age 74, of Okeechobee, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital.

Born Jan. 29, 1922, in Lexington, Ky., Mrs. Griffin had been a resident of Okeechobee for 25 years.

Preceded in death by her husband Adron Franklin Griffin, son Bruce, brothers Todd Rigsby and Denton Rigsby and sister Grace, she was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Tara Pottorf.

Survivors include: three daughters, Linda Creech of Okeechobee, Catherine Pottorf of Cincinnati, Ohio and Etta Levitt and husband Larry of Boulder, Colo. In addition, survivors include seven grandchildren, brother Gus Rigsby of Nicoholasville, Ky., twin sister Jackie Sturm of Palm Bay, and sister Ruth Reynolds of Centerville , Ohio.

Visiting hours, services and interment will take place through the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home in Lexington, Ky. All local arrangements are under the direction of the Buxton Funeral Home.

Mary Frances White

Mary Frances White, age 60, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at her residence.

Born Nov. 20, 1940, in Parken, Ark., Mrs. White had been a resident of Okeechobee for over 40 years.

She was preceded in death by daughters Sharon and Theresa White.

Survivors include: three daughters, Sandy Hembree of Okeechobee, Rebecca Knowles and husband Terry of Sampson, Ala., and Charolotte White of Okeechobee; six sisters, Etta Mae Suarez of Eatonton, Ga., Linda Sutton of Lenville, N.C., Brenda Johnson, Pat Hickman, Ruby Evans and Judy Johnson all of Okeechobee; three grandsons, Thomas J. Hembree, Cody J. Hembree both of Zephyrhills, and J.D. Knowles of Sampson, Ala.; two granddaughters, Ashlee Hembree of Zephyrhills and Melissa Knowles of Sampson, Ala.; one great-granddaughter, Theresa J. Hembree of Zephyrhills; and, several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Buxton Funeral Home on Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 4 until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Noah Taylor, of the Okeechobee North Church of God, on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m. in the Buxton Funeral Home Chapel.
