Funeral Mass today for Eugene G. Garcia

DOWNEY-A Funeral Mass will be heard at 9:30 a.m. today (Friday, March 20) at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for Eugene G. Garcia, a Downey resident since 1939 and an attorney.

He was 78, born May 19, 1919 in Terre Haute, Indiana, and died March 13 at Downey Community Hospital. He was formerly of Akron, Ohio.

He was a member of the American Bar Association, a former member of the Downey Knights of Columbus and Downey Lodge No. 2020 B.P.O. Elks, and was admitted to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1962. He was a lifetime member of the D.A.V., and longtime active member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. He was discharged with physical disabilities as a captain after serving four years in the U.S. Army in World War II. He practiced law in Downey for 40 years before his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen M.; daughters Macrina Garcia of Duarte, Bonita Veguez of Downey; a sister, Anna Alvarez of West Virginia; a brother, Andrew Garcia of Ohio; and two granddaughters.

Burial will follow at All Souls Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.

Gene Hirsch Harvey services set March 28

SOUTH GATE-A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, at the chapel of Biby & Belyea Mortuary, 8665 California Ave., South Gate, for Gene Hirsch Harvey, a life-long South Gate resident and former truck driver and security guard.

He was 54, born in El Monte June 27, 1943, and died March 13.

He was a long-standing member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge No. 663, of Downey, and was a former member of the Diamond Tread Model A Car Club of Downey. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 through 1967, and was preceded in death by his parents, Hank and Marjorie Harvey.

Survivors include his brothers, Hank Harvey of Mira Loma, Wayne A. Harvey (and wife Betty) of South Gate; and several loving friends.

Josephine Valenti mourned at age of 81

DOWNEY-A Funeral Mass will be heard at 9 a.m. Monday, March 23 at St. Raymond's Church for Josephine Valenti, a resident of Downey since 1953 and a former seamstress for many years for the Nafi Corporation, who died at the Southland Lutheran Home March 18.

She was 81, born Jan. 4, 1917 in Detroit, Michigan. She was a former resident of Maywood, and was preceded in death by a brother, John Valenti in 1996.

Survivors include her sister, Josephine Perry of Downey; and three nieces.

The Rev. Father Steve Davoren will officiate. Burial will follow in All Souls Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Zrelak Family Mortuary of Downey.

Anna Leona Lix rites set tomorrow at chapel

DOWNEY-Services for Anna Leona Lix, a Downey resident for 53 years and a devoted homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother, will be held tomorrow (Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. at the Miller-Mies Chapel.

She was 78, born June 17, 1919 in Hamilton County, Nebraska, and died March 18 in Whittier Presbyterian Hospital.

Survivors include her son, James Lix; her daughters, Joan Magouirk and Janis Lix; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Thomas, Ernest and Clarence Van Deusen.

Pastor Paul Estebo will officiate. Burial will be Monday, March 23 at 11 a.m. with the family graveside at the Mountain Valley Memorial Park and Cemetery in Joshua Tree, CA. Arrangements are by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
