Nelson Charles Treloar mourned at age of 86

DOWNEY-Graveside services will be held today (Friday, May 22) at 11 a.m. in Carpinteria for Nelson Charles (Tuffy) Treloar, a former math teacher and coach for the Downey Unified School District and a longtime Downey resident, who died May 16 at Hospice of Interfaith in Whittier.

He was a math teacher and coach for Downey schools from 1937 to 1971 and was noted for his patience, sense of humor, and kindness.

He enlisted and served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the Pacific Theater.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Read Treloar; a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Nancy Treloar; grandson Tim Treloar; granddaughter Tammie and her husband, Jeff Ballard; and great-granddaughters Paige and Bryn Treloar-Ballard.

The family suggests contributions be sent, in his memory, to Hospice or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.


Mary Almeta Cole services at age of 83

DOWNEY-Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for Mary Almeta Cole, a 47 year resident of Downey, who died May 15 at her home.

She was 83, born in Allen, Nebraska, and was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Downey Glemens Club, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Guild, and Real Easted in Downey.

Survivors include her daughter, Joann Clark and husband Jim Clark; a son, Charles Cole and wife Bonnie Cole; grandchildren Kathy Kipfstuhl and husband Jim Kipfstuhl, Denise Rifilato and husband Jim Rifilato, Megan Rosenburg, Raymond Cole, Leslie Cole and Jim Clark; and great-grandchildren Brittany Collins, Sara Rifilato and Rebecca Rifilato.

Rev. John Moloney will officiate. Burial will follow at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach. Arrangements are by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.


Neil Y. Miles funeral set for tomorrow

DOWNEY-Services will be held tomorrow (Saturday, May 23), at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Downey for Neil Y. Miles, a 42-year resident of Downey, who died in Whittier May 17.

He was the owner of Miles Appliances.

He was 84, born in Santa Ana, and was a member of the American Legion, the Orange Elks Lodge, and the Diamond Tread Model A Club.

Survivors include his wife, Iva Miles; a daughter, Janalee Garn; a son, Jerry Miles; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Robert Douglass will officiate. Burial will follow at El Toro Memorial Park.

Friends may visit from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today (Friday, May 22) at the Miller-Mies Mortuary Chapel.


Friends, family remember Charles G. Graef here

DOWNEY-Charles G. Graef, a longtime local resident and businessman whose career was linked with aircraft and investment, died May 16 after a battle with cancer.

Born May 27, 1923 in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of John and Sarah Graef. In 1944 he attended Michigan State University, and entered the Naval Program at Ann Arbor.

He married Mary Van Straten on June 23, 1945.

He loved to travel with his wife.

Survivors include his wife; his six children; eight grandchildren; many relatives and friends.
