Eulogies for L.A. Sheriff Sherman Block

LOS ANGELES-Thousands packed the Hollywood Bowl Sunday, Nov. 1, to pay their last respects to L.A. Sheriff Sherman Block, who died Oct 29 from a cerebral hemorrhage after brain surgery following a fall.

He was 74 and was in the midst of a campaign to win his fifth term as the L.A. Sheriff.

Luminaries attending the ceremonies Sunday included Gov. Pete Wilson and Mayor Richard Riordan. Wilson referred to Block as the county's "Rock of Gibraltar."

Riordan said law enforcement had lost a consummate police professional.

Survivors include his wife, Alyce; a daughter; a son; and two grandchildren.


Carlos Uranga mourned at age of 66 in Downey

DOWNEY-A funeral liturgy was heard Tuesday, Nov. 3, at St. Raymond's Catholic Church for Carlos Uranga, who died Oct. 31 in Downey.

He was 66.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha; his sons, Carlos and James Uranga; daughters Irma Gianpaolo and Sylvia Matthews; and grandchildren Laura Obregon, Christopher Herrera and Madeline Fletcher-Uranga.

Private interment followed. Arrangements were by the Stricklin/Snively Mortuary of Lakewood.


Mass conducted for Emily Ruiz Wathen

DOWNEY-A Mass was heard Oct. 28 at St. Raymond's Catholic Church for Emily Ruiz Wathen, a caring mother, who died Oct. 23.

She was born Aug. 6, 1915 in Gallup, New Mexico, moving later to Holbrook, Arizona, where she finished high school and cashiered at a grocery store.

She was employed at the Harvey House in Winslow when she met and married Francis Wathen, who was from Los Angeles.

They moved to Los Angeles and started a family.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991.

She loved sunflowers and small items that added warmth to a home.

Survivors include her two children, Bernard and Randa.

The Rev. Stephen Davoren officiated. Burial followed at All Souls Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Forest Lawn Mortuary of Long Beach.


Clara M. Kurant laid to rest at age 87

DOWNEY-A Funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for Clara M. Kurant, a resident of Downey for three months, and a former 53 year resident of Huntington Park, who died at Downey Community Hospital Nov. 1.

She was 87, born June 30, 1911 in Britton, South Dakota, and was a former employee for the County of Los Angeles for 15 years.

Survivors include her sisters, Irene Maness of Paramount, Lucille Wanken of Rancho Santa Marguerita; Dorothy Brookie of Oakland and Ruth Angerhofer of San Diego; brothers Philip Millard of Missouri and Raymond Millard of Whittier; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Father John Moloney officiated. Burial followed in the family plot in Britton Cemetery in Britton, South Dakota. Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.


Graveside services today for Charles Suastegui

DOWNEY-Graveside committal services will be held today (Friday, Nov. 6) at 10:30 a.m. at Resurrection Cemetery for Charles Suastegui, a Downey resident for 11 years and a former head packer at Bethlehem Steel Co. for 26 years.

He was 84, born in Los Angeles, and died Nov. 3 at Kaiser Hospital. He was a former resident of Bell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise, in 1990, and his son, Richard.

Survivors include his daughters, Mary Ann Petrucelli and Margaret Otto of Downey, and Patricia Jernigan of Tennessee; son Charles Suastegui of Washington; and five grandchildren.

The Rev. Father John Moloney will officiate. Arrangements are by Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
