Services tomorrow for Mildred E. Zimmermen

DOWNEY-Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 8) at the Downey Zrelak Mortuary Chapel for Mildred Emline Zimmermen, a resident of Downey for 28 years, who died Aug. 3 at St. Francis Medical Center.

She was 86, born in Kansas Oct. 2, 1911, and was a former resident of South Gate.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Florest in 1973.

Survivors include her sons, Donald of Downey, Lawrence of Sedona, Arizona; a brother, Bob Cunningham of Overland Park, Kansas; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Robert Aller of the First Baptist Church of Downey will officiate. Entombment will follow in Angeles Abbey Memorial Park.

Arrangements are by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.


Friends, family mourn Orbrey Duke in La Palma

CYPRESS-Services for Orbrey Duke, a longtime resident of La Palma, a former police officer on Downey's first police force, the former mayor and chief of police of La Palma, and the husband of Alta Duke of the City of Downey Community Services Department, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Friday, Aug. 7), at the Church of Our Fathers at Forest Lawn in Cypress.

He died Tuesday, after a long illness.

Survivors include his wife, Alta; his daughters, Sherry Hennessy and her husband, Jerry; Kim Eliss and her husband Mark; and a sister in Texas.

Burial will follow at Forest Lawn in Cypress.


Lillian (Smokey) McGinnis is mourned at age of 73

DOWNEY-A Memorial Mass will be held Aug. 15, at 11 a.m. Father Steve Davoren officiating; at St. Raymond's Church in Downey for Lillian (Smokey) McGinnis, a Downey resident who died Aug. 2 at Downey Community Hospital.

Born Jan. 11, 1925 in Pensacola, Florida, she was 73.

Survivors include a sister, Anatoli Marie Harrison of Pensacola; and a niece, Karen Norton of Pensacola.

Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.

Cremation and interment in the family plot in Pensacola followed.


Memorial Mass to be held for Clara Bellanca

DOWNEY-Burial services were held July 27 in Lowellville, Ohio, for Clara Bellanca, a former 10 year resident of Downey and homemaker, who died July 22 at her Huntington Beach home.

She was 93, born Jan. 26, 1905 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the daughter of Anthony and Josephine Scaffidi Labrie. She lived in Ohio for 57 years before moving to Southern California in 1963. She was a member of St. Raymond's Church, the TOPS Club, and a crochet club. She moved to Huntington Beach in 1980, and was a member of St. Bonaventure Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip, in 1962.

Survivors include two daughters, Nina Joiner Eager of Visalia, Josephine Rapcinko of Youngstown, Ohio; a son, Phillip, of Huntington Beach; a brother, Sam Labrie of Mansfield, Ohio; three grandchildren, Lorraine Suttle of Downey, Yvonne Rapcinko of Laguna Niguel, and Ed Rapcinko of Youngstown, Ohio; and four great-grandchildren. A daughter, Lena, and sister, Edith, are both deceased.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, at St. Bonaventure Church, 16400 Springdale St., Huntington Beach.
