Friends, family mourn Wilma J. Argo here

DOWNEY-Services were held Thursday, Jan. 7 at the chapel of Allen-English & Estrada in Bell Gardens for Wilma J. Argo, who died Jan. 2 in Downey.

She was born Aug. 23, 1934 in Ada, Oklahoma.

Survivors include her husband, William Edward Argo of Downey; her children, Randy, Rick, Diane, Ronnie, Robbie, Mike and Judy; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Burial followed at Park Lawn Memorial Park in Commerce.


Services are held for Patricia Rachel Poutsma

DOWNEY-Funeral services were held Jan. 5 at Rose Hills Memorial Park for Patricia Rachel Poutsma, a Downey resident for 43 years, who died Jan. 1.

She was born in Los Angeles in 1927.

Survivors include her husband, Henry Poutsma; her son, Charles Poutsma; and her daughter, Charlene Pinder.

Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.


Jessie Agnes Malwitz mourned at age of 87

DOWNEY-Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 4 at the Downey Zrelak Mortuary Chapel for Jessie Agnes Malwitz, a Downey resident for five years, who died at her home Dec. 25.

She was 87, born in Miner County, South Dakota, and was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon in 1993.

Survivors include her daughters, Bonlyn (Ben) Bailey of Downey and Julaine Rose of Virginia; a brother, Palmer Hauge of El Segundo; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

The Rev. Chuck King, grandson-in-law, officiated.

Burial followed in Graceland Memorial Park, Howard, South Dakota. Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.


Leona Pearl McCandlish remembered by many

DOWNEY-Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the Downey Zrelak Mortuary Chapel for Leona Pearl McCandlish, a former longtime resident of Huntington Park, who died Dec. 30 in Scottsdale, Arizona, while visiting relatives.

She was 62, born in Belle Pourche, South Dakota, Aug. 15, 1936, and lived in Huntington, Texas.

She was a former waitress for many years before her recent move to Texas.

Survivors include her husband, Bill of Huntington, Texas; her son, Bill McCandlish of Denver, Colorado; a daughter, Kimberly Baker of Downey; brothers Carmen Graika of Pomona, Kansas, David and Kermit Graika of Ottawa, Kansas, Joe Byers of Scottsdale, Arizona, Paul Graika of Rockford, Illinois; a sister, Darlene Fuqua of Downey; and two grandchildren.

Pastor Gary Beard of the United Methodist Church of Downey officiated. Burial followed at Rose Hills Memorial Park.


Services tomorrow for Agnes B. Williams

DOWNEY-A visitation for Agnes B. Williams, a 46 year resident of Downey, will held from 6 to 8 p.m. today (Friday, Jan. 8) at the chapel of Miller-Mies Mortuary in Downey.

She was 80, born in Illinois, and died Jan. 5 at Downey Community Hospital.

Services will be held tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 9) at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Downey, Pastor John Smyser officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn in Glendale. Arrangements are by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.


Mass in Laguna Niguel held for Lil Russo

LAGUNA NIGUEL-A Mass was heard at St. Timothy's in Laguna Niguel for Lil Russo, a former Downey resident for 43 years, who was very active in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.

She was born in Sicily, came to the U.S. at the age of eight, and died Dec. 22.

Survivors include her husband, Dominic; her sons, Peter of Lake Elsinore, Ben from Laguna Niguel; her daughters, Ria Klein and Lisa Rodriguez of Aliso Viejo, Marianne Goins of Corona, Angela Chavez of Long Beach; and nine grandchildren.

Burial was in All Souls' Cemetery in Long Beach.


Angelina Chavez Glasser funeral services held

DOWNEY-Funeral services were held Jan. 4 at the Allen-English & Estrada Funeral Chapel in Bell Gardens for Angelina Chavez Glasser, who died Dec. 29 in Downey.

She was 62, born May 1, 1936 in San Antonio, Texas, and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth J. Glasser of Downey; her sons, William Marquez Jr. of Downey and Francis Marquez of Montebello; daughters, Desiree Marquez of Monterey Park, Angelina Harmon and Mary Ellen Marquez both of Georgia; sisters Helen Lee and Ernestine Lorona both of Arizona; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews and her aunt Josie Guardia of Arizona, who reared her from birth when her mother died.

Bishop Boyd Leavitt officiated. Ashes were placed Jan. 6 at Park Lawn Memorial Park in Commerce.


Family, friends grieve for E. Eugene Leach

DOWNEY-Services were held Thursday, Jan. 7, at the Memorial Chapel of Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier for E. Eugene Leach, a former 20-year resident of Downey, who died Jan. 4 at a San Luis Obispo hospital.

He was born Dec. 15, 1911, in Creal Springs, Illinois, and had lived in San Luis Obispo for nine years after moving there from Downey. He was retired from Aerojet General in Fullerton.

He was a member of King David's Lodge No. 209 of San Luis Obispo, Royal Arch Masons, the High Twelve Club, and had been an active member of several Masonic Lodges over the past 66 years. He was a member of the San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, June B. Leach; his daughter and son-in-law Judith and John Connely of San Luis Obispo; two sisters, Melba Ingram of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Bertha Pauline Erickson of Missouri; grandchildren Todd Collely of Jamul, California, Diane and Mitch Zwarg of San Ramon, and Lisa and Mark Connely of San Luis Obispo; great-grandchildren Nicholas, Noah and Moriah Zwarg of San Ramon, and Timothy, Elizabeth, Michael and Matthew Connely of San Luis Obispo.


Wednesday services for Patricia Ann Gabaldon

DOWNEY-Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary Chapel for Patricia Ann Gabaldon, a 10 year Downey resident and a sales engineer assistant for 23 years for General Electric Co.

She was born in Burlington, Vermont, June 9, 1940 and died at her home Dec. 31, 1998 at the age of 58.

She was a former resident of Los Angeles.

Survivors include her husband, Max Gabaldon; her daughters, Cheryl (Larry) Reed of Pittsfield, Mass., and Maxine (Mel) Caudillo of Whittier; brothers Bobby, Bradley and Mark Lavigne of Burlington, Mass.; her mother, Dorothy, and stepfather, Carlo Quaglietti of Pittsfield, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

Pastor Rolland Coburn of the First Fundamental Bible Church officiated. Burial followed at Rose Hills Memorial Park. Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.


Private funeral scheduled for Shirley Doris Myers

DOWNEY-Funeral services will be private for Shirley Doris Myers, a resident of Downey for 18 years, who died at her home Jan. 5.

She was 63, born, in Johnson City, Tennessee March 5, 1935.

Survivors include her husband, Robert of Downey; her mother-in-law, Ruth Myers of Downey; and her son, Kermit Matthews of Greenville, South Carolina.

Arrangements are by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.


Donald Charles Barnes services to be Wednesday

DOWNEY-Services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Miller-Mies Mortuary Chapel for Donald Charles Barnes, a Downey resident for 65 years, who died at Kaiser Hospital in Bellflower Jan. 2.

He was a painter for General Veneer Manufacturing for 45 years, and was born in Canada.

Survivors include his wife, Evalyne Barnes; his son, Robert Barnes; his daughter, Cynthia Walters; and grandchildren Dustin Barnes, Donald Barnes, Kyle Walters and Lindey Walters.

Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
