Mrs. Ava Conaway age 89 of Fort Payne, AL passed away Monday, January 22, 2001 at BMC - MontClair in Birmingham, AL. Mrs. Conaway was of Baptist faith and a member of the Ruhama Order of the Eastern Star. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Arzie Grisson Doss. Mrs. Conaway was survived by her Son and Daughter-in-law; Jame and Betty Conaway of Fort Payne, AL. Granddaughter; Kim Traylor, and Great-Grandchildren; Alex and Drew Traylor. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at 2pm CST at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Walker's Chapel  Cemetery. Mrs. Allie Mae Bachelor age 93 of Fort Payne, AL passed away Saturday, January 27, 2001 at BMC Dekalb Hospital in Fort Payne, AL Mrs. bachelor was born November 15, 1907 daughter of the late Ben and  Ida McKown Evatt. She was a member of the Mt Zion Baptist Church. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at 11am CST from the  Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Herman Spillman and Rev. Watson Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Walker's Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, January 29, 2001 from 5 until 9pm CST at the funeral home. Mrs. Mable Ventress Ellis age 90 of Fort Payne, AL passed away Sunday, January 28, 2001. Mrs. Ellis was born October 23, 1910 in Collinsville, AL daughter of the late Thomas Aaron and Virgina Petty  Ventress. Her Husband, Bill Ellis preceded her in death. She was a  former school teacher for the Dekalb County School System and a member of the First Baptist Church in Fort Payne, AL, Baptist Women, and Fort Payne Garden Club. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 30 ,2001 at 2pm CST from the  Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Pat McFadden and Rev. Jimmy Griffin officiating. Mrs. Wilburn was born August 13, 1912 in Dekalb County, AL daughter of the late John Wallace and Arizona Elizabeth Poe Cooper. Mr. Leman O. Cooper age 85 of Fort Payne, AL passed away Monday, February 5, 2001 in UAB Hospital in Birmingham, AL. Mr. Cooper was a native of Dekalb County, AL., born April 2, 1915 son of the late John Wallace and Arizona Pope Cooper. Mrs. Nelda Annette Oliver Tolbert age 62 of Gadsden, Al passed away Friday, August 3, 2001 at a Gadsden Hospital. Mrs. Tolbert was a native of Collinsville, AL and born July 16, 1939, daughter of the late Clarence and Monnie Lee Reed Oliver. She was a member of the Collinsville Baptist Church and retired R. Mr. Parmer Coy Johnson age 76 of Fort  Payne, Al passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2001 at a Chattanooga Hospital. Mr. Johnson was born October 1, 2001 in Dekalb County, AL son of the late Theo and Ruth Shirley Johnson. He was retired from the American Freight as a Truck Driver and a member of the teamsters. He was preceded in death by  his Wife; Inez Trussell Johnson and Grandson; Jerry raven Johnson. W. 3128 of Fort Payne, AL., Fort Payne Masonic Lodge 437. Mr. Newsome was preceded in death by his Wife; Mildred Jolly Newsome. Mrs. Wanda Boyd Browder age 77 of Fort Payne, AL passed away Saturday, September 29, 2001. Mrs. Browder was a member of the St. Paul Methodist Church in Fort Payne, AL. She was a contestant in the Ms. Alabama Nursing Home Contest. She was Miss Crowne Health Care in 1999. A native of Herrin, Illinois the daughter of Benjamin and Ida Waller Boyd. She was a retired beautician, and traveled throughout 7 southern states as a Beauty Consultant Supervisor with Lorick Enterprises. Mrs. Browder is survived by her Sons; John Bennett Vartanian and Joseph Armen Vartanian, both of Fort Payne, AL Daughter; Mrs. Julia Steed of Bridgeton, Missouri Brother; John B. Mrs. Daugherty was a member of The Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Fort Payne, AL. She was a native of Dekalb County, AL., daughter of the late Claris and Ella Elizabeth Williamson Reece. Mrs. Beatrice Inez Thompson age 77 of Fort Payne, AL passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2001 in a Birmingham Hospital. Mrs. Thompson was a native of Dekalb County, AL., born April 9, 1924, daughter of the late Jewell and Hattie Colley McElhaney. She was a member of the Ruhuma Baptist Church. Women Coffee Club and member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter. She was preceded in death by her Husband; Henry Thompson in 1987. On Friday, October 5, 2001 Mrs. Avo Minnix of Fort Payne, AL went home to be with her Lord. She was 89 years old. Mrs. Minnix was of the McKestes Community, Dawson, AL., the daughter of the late Willie and Alice Lovvorn Traylor, a member of he Flat Rock Baptist Church of the McKestes Community. Mr. William Doyle Scruggs, a lifelong resident of Dekalb County, Alabama died Tuesday. November 6, 2001. He was born in Fort Payne on May 29, 1943. He graduated from The Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Alabama in 1965. Upon his graduation from the University of Alabama Law School in 1968, he began practicing law in Fort Payne, Alabama, where he practiced until his death. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order at the University of Alabama, President of the Alabama State Bar Association in 1986-87, a member of the Board of Bar Commissioners from 1973 to 1992, a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Bar Foundation and the Alabama Bar Foundation, and received the Alabama State Award of Merit 1982. Scruggs also served as a judge on the Alabama Court of the Judiciary from 1984 until his death. An avid hunter and outdoorsman, Scruggs was a member of the Safari Club International and the British Association for Shooting and Conversation. He hunted in Afghanistan, Africa, Argentina, Austria, Germany, Iran, Scotland, Spain and his beloved Lookout Mountain. He is survived by his Wife; Kay Malone Scruggs of Fort Payne. Daughter; Shannon Scruggs Campagna ; a Son-in-law; Christopher Campagna, Granddaughter, Elizabeth Banks Campagna of Alexandria. Virginia. Sister, Jane Scruggs of Huntsville, Alabama. Mr. Robert William Beck, Sr. age 78 of Fort Payne, AL passed away at his residence Tuesday, November 6, 2001 following a lengthy illness. Robert was well known as "Beck" of Fergy and Beck Body Shop, which later became Beck's Body Shop. he served in the USAF during WWII in Italy 780th  Bombardment from McCook Air Base in Nebraska. He was precede in death  by his Wife; Hazel M. Beck, Son; Robert William "Bobby" Beck and a Daughter; Ellen Lynn Beck. Survivors include his Daughter and Son-in-law; Karen and Kevin Lacy, Grandchildren; John Gabriel and Emily Rebecka of Newport News, VA Brother-in-law; Thomas N. Adele was born September 2, 1914 in Johnson City, IL., daughter of Dorothy Marie Huggins Hughes and the late John Arthur Hughes. She was Professor emeritus at University of Oklahoma and active in the Battered Women's Shelter. Mrs. Jackson was a native of  Dekalb County, AL, born May 4, 1921, daughter of the  late Hugh and Delia Hancock Tommie. She was a member of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and a Housewife. Mr. James Wyman Fields, Sr.  age 69 of Fort Payne, AL passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2002 in the BMC Hospital. Mr. James Darrell Wooten, age 44 of Fort Payne passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at BMC DeKalb Hospital.Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday from the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 until 8 PM.

Mrs. Leona Barnett Goodman, age 86, of Fort Payne, AL passed away Monday, June 3, 2002 at her residence. Mrs. Goodman was born December 20, 1915 in DeKalb County, daughter of the late James "Jim" Lafayette and Georgia Foster Barnett. She was retired from Shugart's Hosiery Mill where she worked as a looper. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Live Oak, FL. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ernest Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the Mtn. View Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 4, 2002 from 5-8 PM at the funeral home. Survivors include: daughters, Elaine Goodman Gray of Fort Payne, Estelle Wills Lyons of Mayo, FL, sons, Wayne Wills of Rainsville, Donald Goodman of Fort Payne, sister Jessie Thompson of East Ridge, TN, 6 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Doyle J. Scott, 80 of Fort Payne died Thursday, June 6, 2002 at his residence. Mr. Scott was a native of DeKalb County, born October 27, 1921, son of the late James Franklin and Gussie Bryant Scott. He was a member of the Mt. Herman Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. He was a veteran of WWII. He was the retired owner of Scott Pool Co. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Sunday, June 9, 2002 from the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Orien Ledford and Rev. David House officiating. Burial will be in the Mountain View Memory Gardens. The family will accept flowers, or donation may be made to the Parkinson Disease Association of Mt. Herman Baptist Church. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and Deacons of Mt. Herman Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. Survivors include his wife, Josie Mae Kerby Scott. Daughters and sons-in-law, Linda (Ed) Chadwick, Fort Payne, Barbara (Roger) Hope, Fort Payne, Melba (Wayne) Carden, Fort Payne, and Deborah (Steve) Jeffers, Tullahoma, TN. Sons and daughters-in-law, Doyle Wayne (Sandra) Scott, Fort Payne, Ronald Scott, Huntsville, AL, Don (Annette) Scott, Kennesaw, GA, and Clayton (T.J.) Scott, Fort Payne. Sisters, Mamie Eva Pike, Flat Rock, Yvonne Rogers, Fort Payne, and Scottie Clowers, Fort Payne. Brother, Dwight Scott, Soddy Daisey, TN, 17 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
