| Q. Why does Obituary Central index obituaries on some online newspapers that already have search engines? | A. If an online newspaper has a search engine that searches obits exclusively, then we link to that search engine. If their search engine brings up results that include the sports, commentaries, news, etc., then we attempt to index JUST the obits for your researching convenience. If you desire to find your surnames in the other sections of the publication, then it is best to use their search facilities. |
| Q. Why do you not include the range of dates for a particular obituary archive? | A. It is best, for Obituary Central's sake, not to state ranges because online newspapers change things up quite often. They sometimes add data from previous years, and ARE adding current data constantly. The safe thing to say about online newspapers is that most of them archive obits from 2 to 4 years ago to the present. |
| Q. Are you at Obituary Central infringing upon any copyright laws by accessing all of these online obituaries? | A.
No.
We are not removing any data from the online newspapers' sites.
Obituary Central's goal is to send users TO their sites. In most
cases, we have added the main page URL of the newspaper to the search page
to encourage the researcher to visit.
Our search engines simply index the obituary pages of each site and allow keyword searches with in context results. This is the same thing that many global search engines such as Alta Vista do except we concentrate only on obits. |
| Q. I can't find my Aunt Lillie in your search engine and I KNOW she died on Apr. 14, 1998 in that county. Why? | A. It should go without saying that NOT EVERY obituary is online. The ones that ARE, however, we index. Obituary Central can't control the obituaries that are archived, just index and link to them. Having had the same problem myself in my research, my heart goes out to you! |
| Q. Do you have a mailing list that can let me know when new links are added? | A. Yes! You can subscribe from this link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/obitcentral |
