St. Mary's Chapel Cemetery
Near Hillsborough, North Carolina
The first St. Mary’s Chapel, established in 1759, was located in the northeast corner of the walled cemetery lot. The second chapel, located approximately 400 feet northwest of the original chapel, was constructed in 1859.
The cemetery, approximately
one acre in size, contains a large number of graves without identifying
markers. The following list of graves is based on compilation made during
1937 and 1940 by the Historical Records Survey of North Carolina, re-checked
in September 1960.

N. B. : Excerpts
from the Hillsborough Recorder:
1836 Oct. 14 - The Commissioners let bids for building of a stone
wall around graveyard
at St. Mary’s.
Transcriber’s note: This data was copied from a typed 3 page document I copied at the North Carolina State Archives in 1980. A telephone to the Rector of St. Mary’s in 1985 revealed the Nichols and Riggs families, my ancestors were instrumental in the formation of the church and a silver chalice is still in their possession that was given the church by George Riggs.
